Sechelt: Experience our Village

The Lower Sunshine Coast stretches from Landgdale in the south to Egmont in the north, with a ferry terminal at each end. Situated between mountains and the sea, with well over 100 km of waterfront, it’s the perfect place for a weekend getaway from the Vancouver and Powell River regions – just a 40 minute ferry ride through world-class scenery from either location. But there’s so much to see and do here, you can easily spend a week or more.

The district municipality of Sechelt (from the Shishalh First Nations) is centrally located on a narrow isthmus of land bordered on one side by the Salish Sea (Georgia Strait) and on the other by Sechelt Inlet. Sechelt is frequently referred to as the “land between two waters” by many residents, as well as tourism publications. With plenty of accommodations, restaurants, shops and services, Sechelt is the perfect “home base” for exploring the Lower Sunshine Coast. If you’re visiting Canada from overseas, and looking for a holiday destination where you may encounter wildlife, the Sunshine Coast is an ideal spot. A 20 minute float plane ride (a scenic adventure itself) can bring you directly from the Vancouver International Airport or the Vancouver Harbour to Sechelt.

Wildlife here on the Coast include eagles, great blue herons, deer, coyotes, bears, cougars (though these are elusive and rarely seen), whales, dolphins, and an abundance of smaller mammals, birds and ocean life. Our local waters are renowned among scuba divers as some of the best cold-water diving in the world, and up Sechelt Inlet divers frequently visit the HMCS Chaudiere on the inlet floor. The mountains offer world-class mountain biking routes, hiking trails, and beautiful lakes for swimming, fishing and boating. (In the winter, Dakota Ridge offers cross country skiing, snowshoeing and sledding.) Local companies rent boats and sports equipment, and offer various land, water and air guided tours.

On top of our stunning scenery and abundant wildlife, Sechelt also offers great local shopping, relaxing massage/spa/salon services, and an enjoyable dining and cafe scene. If you’ve forgotten to pack anything, you’re likely to find it for sale in Sechelt. If the car or RV needs some attention, or you need to attend to business on your travels, those services are available. If you’re cooking for yourself, our grocery stores offer a varied selection of products. Sechelt offers just the right balance between small-town ambiance and a larger community’s selection of products and services. We hope to welcome you to our seaside village soon!
