Presenters: Rob Flux and Emily Fenton

Rob describes this presentation for Business With A Twist as “a ‘mish-mash’ of common questions we field, as well as opportunities and issues that we highlight to our clients to save them money.  We’re talking about thousands of dollars of opportunities, not just a few bucks.”

rob-flux-business-with-a-twist-secheltRobert E. Flux, CA, CPA (Illinois), CFP – Sechelt Downtown Business Association Treasurer

Rob made the move to the Sunshine Coast in 2007 from Calgary with his wife Christina to enjoy the lifestyle that the Coast offers, and to join the Coast Group Chartered Accountants in Sechelt as the Partner in charge of taxation services.  Before moving to the Sunshine Coast Rob had just over 10 years of experience working with some of the largest Chartered Accounting firms in Canada.   Rob joined the Sechelt Downtown Business Association in 2008 as its Treasurer.

Emily Fenton was born and raised in Sechelt and has been working in accounting since 1995. She joined The Coast Group in the fall of 2007. Emily has a keen, detailed oriented work ethic, which blends perfectly with her dynamic personality. She has an adventurous spirit, enjoys time spent outside, and with a spare moment alone she loves a long run.

The Sechelt Downtown Business Association is once again participating in the annual BIABC's "Turn Down the Heat Week", proudly sponsored by FortisBC. This is part of an ongoing commitment to work with BC businesses to improve energy efficiency while having a positive effect in the community as well as an influence on your bottom line. You, along with many other businesses across the province, will be promoting energy conservation and encouraging customers to turn down their heat at home and at work, to wear a sweater and to donate sweaters and other warm clothing articles for people in need.

The Sechelt Downtown Business Association will donate all sweaters collected to the Sunshine Coast Salvation Army, to be distributed as needed throughout the Coast and in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver.

    YOU ARE INVITED!

On February 20 and 21, Community Futures and the Sunshine Coast tech community will be hosting two days of events as they welcome Innovation Island to the Sunshine Coast.

For many years Innovation Island has been supporting scientific and technical innovation on Vancouver Island. So, the sponsors are really pleased that Paris Gaudet (Executive Director) and Graham Truax (Executive in Residence), along with Ean Jackson, have agreed to spend two days on the coast to meet with our community and share their experience doing and supporting technology, innovation, and entrepreneurship.

shutterstock_2770835The first event will be held in downtown Sechelt. On Friday afternoon (February 20th) from 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm, at the Seaside Center in Sechelt, all members the community are invited to join the tech community to hear Paris and Graham talk about what they have learned from their years of experience fostering regional innovation.

On Friday evening, from 7:00 pm -10:00 pm or so, there will be a tech community meetup at Perspephone tasting room in Gibsons. This is a chance to meet these guests and share some fine local brew and pizza.

On Saturday (February 21) there will be a Startup 101 course to be led by Graham Truax and Ean Jackson, from 9:00 am - 5:00 pm at the Gibsons Public Market. The community is very fortunate to have Innovation Island bring to the coast two people with such deep experience and connections in the tech and innovation scene in BC.

This one-day course is for founders of early-stage ventures (or those who want to be) who need straight-shooting insight on what's required to turn IDEAS into COMPANIES. Anyone curious if this is fit for them should read through the testimonials on the registration page to get a sense of the amazing resources and advice they can expect for the nominal fee of just $20.

If you are interested in any of these events, you can find out more, and register at the Sunshine Coast Tech Hub website.

Log RollingThis year’s Canada Day celebrations will feature the West Coast Lumberjack Show. This action-packed show provides non-stop entertainment and has been performed all over the world as well as being featured on TV series such as The Amazing Race Australia and Canada’s Got Talent, where judge Martin Short described it as “Quintessentially British Columbian!” This is an event you don’t want to miss.

The show features four professional lumberjack athletes who are current or former Canadian Champions in various lumberjack sports. The stage will be located in the parking lot at Trail Bay Mall (behind Clayton’s) in downtown Sechelt.

Show times are 1:00 pm, 3:00 pm and 5:00pm. Each show is about 35 to 40 minutes long and there will be live music and food vendors in between shows. Please bring your own chair if you require seating.

    Events include

    • Log rolling: Log rolling is typically a highlight of the show. A lumberjack from each team will stand on top of a floating red cedar log and attempt to roll the other off. Watch for fast foot work and lots of water flying. The best of three falls wins.
    • Axe throwing: A lumberjack from each team will stand 20 feet from the target and throw a double bitted axe at the target. The Bull’s eye counts as 5 points, then 4, 3, 2 and 1. The lumberjack with highest score in three throws wins. Lots of crowd cheering involved!
    • Springboard Chop: This is one of the most exciting and dangerous events in the show. A lumberjack from each team will use his axe to make a notch into a standing tree butt. He will then place a wooden springboard (originally used in the mid-1800’s) into the notch, climb on the board and then chop a second notch. A second springboard goes into the second notch and the lumberjack, now being almost ten feet off the ground, will chop the block off the top. Speed and accuracy are essential when on the springboard!
    • Jack ‘n Jill Cross-Cut: A lady from each side of the crowd is chosen to participate. Using the same cross-cut saw that the lumberjacks use, the ladies will saw through the log along with their lumberjack partners. The winner will receive a special prize and of course, the loser will not go away empty handed either.
    • Cross-cut Saw vs Chainsaw
    • Chainsaw Carving: Using their reliable Husqvarna chainsaws, you will be amazed at what our lumberjacks can carve from a standing log in under two minutes!
    • Underhand Chop: A lumberjack from each team stands on top of a horizontal log and chops between his feet using a razor-sharp racing axe. Once he reaches the halfway point he turns around and chops through the back side of the log. The lumberjack whose log is cut in half first wins!
    • Hot Saw Race
    • Standing Block Chop
    • Cross-Cut Sawing Race

The SDBA wishes to extend its thanks to the generous sponsors and supporters who made this event possible:

    • Sunshine Coast Community Foundation – We received a grant form the foundation of $4000.00.
    • Our grant application was sponsored by the District of Sechelt as the SDBA is not a charity and grants can only be awarded to charities or those organizations sponsored by charities or local governments.

bigstock-Christmas-tree-vector-eps--25744466The Sechelt Downtown Business Association is again organizing lit Christmas Trees in downtown Sechelt, and is inviting families, businesses, groups of friends, and organizations to decorate trees at several locations in the downtown area.

All lights must be LED, with a preference for white lights. Other suggestions for decorations include tinsel and tasteful Christmas decorations. All lights and decorations should be tied or zap-strapped onto the tree to prevent the wind from blowing anything off.

There is a $35.00 registration fee for each tree. Registration fees may be dropped off at the SDBA office, at the Salvation Army Thrift Store or at Artworks Gallery & Framing. Register early for the best selection.

The trees will be provided by the SDBA, and will be available to decorate by Wednesday, November 25, 2015. The trees need to be decorated as soon as possible thereafter – we would like to have all trees decorated by Saturday, November 28, if possible, in time for the Light the Lights, Parade of Lights, Santa photos, and Christmas Caroling events being held that evening.

Please complete the Registration Form on this page. A copy of your form will be emailed to the address supplied. Please include your reference number or a copy of your registration form with your payment.

    Coming up in November...

    Shop the Neighbourhood

    November 28, 2015

When you shop locally, you are supporting a strong community. Local purchases have lasting environmental, social and economic impacts on the neighbourhoods where we live, work and play.

    300-x-250

Did you know that small businesses represent 2/3 of all the jobs generated in Canada private sector, and drive nearly 30% of Canada's GDP? And those businesses reinvest in the community, through their purchases and their support of non-profit activities.

Your dollars have a greater impact when you spend them locally. Please join the Shop the Neighbourhood initiative on November 28th and plan to spend your day - and your dollars - in your town. The businesses of downtown Sechelt look forward to sharing special promotions with you on November 28th. Take the pledge here to Shop the Neighbourhood.

That's also the day we'll be lighting up Sechelt for Christmas and holding a holiday parade. So come on down and enjoy a day of shopping, dinner out, and holiday entertainment. See you November 28th!

Kick Off the Holiday Season in Sechelt on November 28th!

Dress up warm and join us to celebrate the season! There may be a chill in the air but the magic of Christmas will be felt all around as we Light up Downtown Sechelt.

Hot dogs are available for purchase at the Old Church square.

Service and Customer Experience: Inspired by Disney

Guest Speaker: Ted Topping, Creative Insights Inc., Vancouver

This high-energy interactive presentation by Ted Topping will let even small businesses benchmark and learn from Disney, the international brand that has successfully delivered the world’s most enduring and successful theme park experiences for six decades. But don’t let the fun fool you. These are serious business lessons based directly on the real-life service and customer experience that is delivered every day at Disneyland.

    ted-topping-250px

Ted Topping knows Disney as co-facilitator of Perfecting the Customer Experience, a unique, two-day benchmarking program held in Anaheim, CA. In that program, Ted helps participants learn first hand that quality (attention to details) and service (exceeding guest expectations) need to be built into, and not separate from, whatever product or service they are selling.

In this motivating session, Ted will demonstrate the service standard to which
every consumer-facing business on the Sunshine Coast should aspire, including:

    • Solid ideas for perfecting the customer experience and creating loyal customers.
    • Proven examples from a business that welcomes more than 27 million guests each year and has developed world-class systems and techniques to do it.
    • Practical suggestions for transferring what you learn directly to your business.

The super-effective tactics used by Disney can be implemented in any kind of retail, tourism, hospitality,
financial, home-based or other similar businesses. And this fun, interactive presentation will help you do it.

The Sechelt Downtown Business Association, in collaboration with FortisBC, are providing warmth to communities across the province this November. Turn Down the Heat Week runs from November 4 – 10, 2017 and encourages residents and businesses alike to reduce their energy consumption by turning down the heat, donning a comfy sweater and providing for those in need.

This year close to 20 Business Improvement Areas (BIAs) from across Metro Vancouver, Vancouver Island, and the Okanagan are dialing down their thermostats to bring awareness to this important issue. Residents in participating areas are invited to show their support by bundling up in their cosiest sweaters and donating warm clothing for local charities at participating BIAs.

    What is Single Use Plastic?

Single use plastic is petroleum-based packaging that is designed to be used once, and then discarded. It is primarily used for wrapping and packaging food, drinks and groceries, and includes plastic drink bottles, produce and shopping bags, cutlery, take-away food containers, cups, straws, plastic wrap, six pack rings, and more. Even paper coffee cups can be lined with plastic.

Why Stop Using Single Use Plastic?

    • Many plastic items cannot be or are not recycled. Globally only 7 – 9% of plastics collected are recycled (https://www.nationalgeographic.com/news/2017/07/plastic-produced-recycling-waste-ocean-trash-debris-environment/) – the rest end up in our landfills or in our environment. As you know, commercial recycling pick-up in Sechelt has been suspended, making it difficult for customers and businesses to recycle at all.
    • It takes a significant amount of energy and resources to manufacture and ship single-use plastics, only to be used briefly and then discarded. This is an inefficient and expensive way to use scarce resources.
    • Small particles of plastics are now found throughout our earth, air, water, plants, animals and our own bodies! A whopping 8 million tonnes of plastic ends up in our oceans each year, worldwide. By 2050, there will be more plastic by weight than fish in the sea!
    • Plastic takes only a couple seconds to throw out and approximately 400 years to biodegrade, with most of the plastic ever produced still exists in the environment.
    • Taking action on the unsustainable use of plastics helps to reduce climate change by lessening our reliance on petroleum by-products.
